CAHWT national day of protests on Saturday 23 March

Responding to the announcement by the Department of the Environment that it was cutting the amount of houses eligible to claim exemption from the property tax on the basis of inhabiting ghost estates from 43,000 as was the case last year with the Household Tax to 5,100 this year in the case of the Property Tax Ruth Coppinger on behalf of the campaign said:
“Do we need any further proof that this is not a charge for funding local services but rather an austerity tax? It is hard to think of anybody more poorly catered for by our public services than those living in ghost estates, who by definition are living in the most overpriced accommodation and often have to suffer exorbitant estate management fees as well.
“As the realisation grows on the population about what this charge means for them in the coming weeks we are bound to see an angry backlash. The CAHWT is preparing itself with a comprehensive round of public meetings, protests and activities. We encourage people to join us this Saturday which will be marked as a national day of local activities, protests and pickets getting the message out that there is a campaign that people can get active in in the fight against the property tax.”
