Cork Women’s Right to Choose Group Statement 1st March 2013

Cork Women’s Right to Choose Group (CWRCG) Statement 1st March 2013The CWRCG supports today’s Action on X Statement but calls for the repeal of Article 40.3.3.

Cork women’s Right to Choose Group supports all the points in today’s statement, particularly, the urgent calls for X Case legislation, in order to establish in statute women’s right to life when a life-threatening condition arises durin…g pregnancy, and for legislation on access to terminations in Ireland in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.

Cork Women’s Right to Choose Group goes further and calls for repeal of Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution and sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the person Act, 1861.

We do this on the following grounds:

1. We must be able to deal with terminations in cases of rape or incest.

2. We must permit terminations for health reasons.

3. Women should not be forced to travel at a time when they need their families around them.

4. Article 40.3.3 interferes with the rights of women, of couples and of parents to make private decisions.

5. In 1983 it was put in place by a vote of 36% of the electorate in a turnout of 54%.

6. It has never represented a majority position on this complex issue.

7. Opinion polls indicate there is support for change.

8. Women’s rights should be reinforced and not qualified by a constitution.

9. Termination of pregnancy is a women’s health matter and not a constitutional issue.
