new SP statement on Clare Daly and the ULA

They seem to be arguing for discipline by ULA TDs over the Wallace question – surely something approrpiate for a party rather than an alliance…

It’s not about an argument for party discipline. It’s more a straightforward statement of fact that aspects of Clare’s political association with Wallace have already now posed problems for the Socialist Party and for the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes. The ULA will be no different in that regard.

This latest SP statement goes a lot further than just noting that Clare’s close association with Mick Wallace is damaging.

It may not have been your intention but the logic of the argument outlined here is for a programmatically based discipline – and that is only appropriate for a party type organisation.

This is quite different from the consensus model with right of veto over disputed questions.

If the ULA has the right to impose programmatic discipline based on a majority view then clearly we need to have fully democratic structures to come up with that programme and that means a party with one-member one-vote.

You can’t have it both ways I’m afraid.
